Past L.A.O.T.W. – MaLLy

Since when did Rhymesayers bring someone on board that we in the Twin Cities weren’t ready to hear? MaLLy is no different.  There is a no-nonsense feel to lyrics as the MC controls the room.  He’s not up there to brag about how many cars he’s driven, how many people he’s shot or even what would happen if you stepped to him but MaLLy brings a sense of control to his performances no matter how rowdy the crowd gets.

There is a serous tone put to each line he speaks as if he is telling you a story; one that you shouldn’t miss.  MaLLy has a wealth of knowledge but what makes him stand out, is his poetic like ability to relate his words to anyone who will listen.

It doesn’t matter who will listen, MaLLy‘s potent and on-point lyrics have the ability to catch the attention of even the most distracted people in the room (iPhone users).

Catch MaLLy walking around before or after any show; take a look in his eyes and you’ll see the pride he has.  Being tapped to perform at Rhymsayer’s SoundSet this year, MaLLy won’t even bat an eye cuz he knows the end game is bigger.  Since 2007 MaLLy has been performing, recording and inspiring those around him.

Fresh off of being named The City Pages “Best of: Hip-Hop Artist,” MaLLy isn’t slowing down one step.  His new album, ”The Last Great” is dropping May 15th and should be the talk of the town for a while.  With upcoming shows, CD release parties, his own shows and even SoundSet, MaLLy is a force to be reckoned with.  Rep the 612 and support MaLLy. You won’t regret it.

Retribution Gospel Choir – Triple Rock

First things first, this band reminds me of those American Pie movies.  I don’t know what it was, but they sounded just like they should be the soundtrack to a hit 1990s/early 2000s movie.

I didn’t know much about this band, never heard one of their songs, but rather wanted to go in “deaf” to anything they were about.  Good decision on my part (then again, I hardly ever make bad decisions…just ask my exes).  I was so pleasantly surprised with the show I got, that I would highly suggest taking some time out of your very busy schedule this summer and attending a rather delightful show put on by Retribution Gospel Choir.

They hit ever harmony, played professionally (by that I mean the sound guy did his job to make them sound great), and all-in-all, got a new fan in me.  These guys could rock the only way the 1990s could and welcomed all the young-bucks around me to a show that only Third Eye Blind could have played in 1998.  Retribution Gospel Choir has a sound that most bands today don’t.  They are tight, on key and everything I would expect from them…and then some.

I’d give them a solid B+ (but if the curve was set lower, could round up to an A-)
