Listening to Dan Croll’s From Nowhere and a couple of things struck me immediately. First, it has that beachy 1960’s pop sound that has been so popular for the last four or so years, reminiscent of The Drums or Surfer Blood. That was the first five seconds; and then the guitar and vocals kicked in. Now I understand why From Nowhere is being hammered by the U.K.’s Radio 1. I like Croll’s sound, he reminds me of a poppy-er, and perhaps happier, Darwin Deez.

Croll’s vocals on In/Out remind me a wee bit of Owl City’s Adam Young only more mature and interesting. On Compliment Your Soul he sounds anthemic, folky, full to bursting and I LOVE IT! This would be a great song to drink margaritas on the rocks to while dancing around with my girlfriends and getting ready for a night on the town 🙂 The best part is when the song comes back and grabs you for a second go-round. Being as I live in North Minneapolis, I had to pull out my ear phones and make sure someone with a shitload of bass wasn’t parked outside of my house. Remember that feeling you got the first time you heard F.U.N.’s Carry On? That feeling is back with Compliment Your Soul.

Apparently, although Croll looks like Buddy Holly his life is more representative of Neil “Razor” Ruddock . An aspiring rugby player, Croll was sidelined at the age of 17 when he suffered a broken leg that left him in a cast for a year. This led him to his musical career and now, he’s the latest scouser to represent in the U.S.

Hey everybody! I checked out Dan Croll’s show last night and loved it. Not just because he’s a Brit and I happened to be married to a Brit (although that helps) but because it was a really fun show.

Croll performs all of the music on his EP himself so I was curious to see how he would translate that to his live show. Let me tell you, he does it well. His road band is awesome and is a big part of what makes his show fun. When Croll started his show he sang with his hand casually stuck in his pocket, his sound unexpectedly full of doo-wop. He sounded more Southern Californian with his hand claps and sweet lyrics, which worked really well in the intimate club setting. When someone in the crowd asked Croll about the Vikings win over the Steelers in London this past Sunday he had no clue what he was being asked about. However, he made a quick recovery thanks to his keyboardist and congratulated the Minneapolis fans. From then on it was pure love from the crowd.

During the first two-thirds of the show Croll continued to remind me of Adam Young, as I mentioned in my preview. Croll kept up a nice banter between songs; after all, who doesn’t love chatting with an Englishman? The only issue I had with the show was I didn’t feel like the variety of the music played represented the variety of music Croll has out on SoundCloud. That had been a major draw for me, that while I was previewing his music I didn’t know what to expect from one song to the next. Most of Croll’s set last night consisted of poppy music that came close to losing my interest after a bit.

Luckily, From Nowhere pulled me back in with its harder pop sound including more drums and guitar. And, halfway through the rhythm again changed and became even harder and turned more folk, which I really enjoyed. I’ve never been a fan of The Triple Rock and that opinion was solidified last night when Croll suffered from various squeaks and feedback as the show went on but my enjoyment of the music wasn’t dampened.

Croll releases his first LP after Christmas and one of the songs on it, Home, was by far his best and I hope to preview the album and dig deeper into Croll’s music when it’s released. He’ll be back through the Twin Cities next year and I’m looking forward to seeing him again 🙂
